Chargers vs. Chiefs 9/5/25

The Chargers are coming off a solid season but a disappointing postseason. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are coming off a “down year” where they still made it to the Super Bowl. If the Chargers want to win the AFC West this year, this game is almost a must-win for them. They added a running back in the draft and free agency who should have an immediate impact, along with a few more playmaking receivers, addressing a major weakness from last season. They also brought back Charger great Keenan Allen to help diversify and energize their offense. However, they did lose their All-Pro level LT, Joe Alt, during training camp—a huge blow. On the other hand, the Chiefs are essentially running back the same roster that went to the Super Bowl last year. Their receivers should be better, notably Worthy, who had a strong rookie season.

For the Chargers to win:

They’ll need to utilize their new backs to control the time of possession. Keeping the league’s best player off the field as much as possible is key. Their secondary looked vulnerable at times last season and will need to tighten up if they want to compete in this division, which is arguably the best coached in NFL history. If they get their run game going early and Herbert plays like his usual self, this game should favor the Chargers. Vegas agrees, listing them as a +145 underdog against a team with the best player in the league coming off a Super Bowl appearance.

For the Chiefs to win:

They’ll need their defensive line to dominate the game. Allowing the Chargers to get downhill opens up play-action opportunities for an elite quarterback like Mahomes, who will pick defenses apart if given the chance. They also need someone in the backfield to step up and claim the No. 1 running back role. I wonder how prepared they are after an offseason full of distractions, including their documentary “The Kingdom” on ESPN and Travis Kelce’s wedding plans with Taylor. They also had a disappointing preseason—only great teams can flip the switch quickly. We’ll see if this year’s Chiefs are truly elite.

Prediction:

This will likely be a lower-scoring game, with the Chargers edging out the Chiefs, 21-24, thanks to their ground game.
